Acoustic Guitar Blog Overview

Welcome to the Acoustic Guitar Blog. This blog is one of many belonging to Tony Hogan. Over a period of time you'll find lots of quality information here that could help you develop as a guitar player.

Amongst the 'not so wonderful' things on the Internet, there are lots of good things on the Internet that will help you upgrade your skills. And as a music teacher, student, musician and lover of guitar, I recommend that you learn from everyone. An open mind is a good thing, discrimination is good but critisism can get in the way of learning.

So what's so different about me.

Well, I understand a lot about the theory of music. Is that useful to you? You may not think so, but I think it can be useful because it can open up new areas to experiment in. I play across numerous styles such as Open Tunings, Celtic, Jazz, Bluegrass, fingerstyle, Acoustic Rock, Blues, folk and many hybrids of music. Sometime back I also I studied Indian music. I can very comfortably do the singer player guitar/songwriter thing as well, to swap between any of the above is very easy.

I work as an Information Technology teacher as well as perform music whenever it suits me. I entered Information technology because of the changes in the music industry that happened about 10 -12 years ago or so, things went computerized and I felt a need to move with the technological Changes.

Plus I have built my own electric and acoustic guitars.

Over the 39 year period that I have been involved in the guitar you might assume that I've learnt a little.

I was fortunate to study with the great Ike Isaacs and on a number of occassions, because he was a good friend I got to jam / play duets with him. Now for those of you that don't know Ike Isaacs ...think Django Reinhardt. Ike at one point occupied the seat that Django had in Stephane Grapelli's band.

Ike also jammed with many other players such as Joe Pass, Wes Montgomery, Jim Hall, Howard Roberts...the list is very long. So as a young musician of about 30, this was an honour and an incredible learning experience. Although all the players mentioned are jazz players, Ike always taught students to take the information he had to share and 'do it your way'.

At the same time that I was learning the complicated aspects of music, over the years I also learnt to appreciate the beauty in the simplicity of some music styles...to be honest a lot of complex technical guitar sounds aweful to me, so regardless how clever it is, if it don't sound good it aint good.

The acoustic guitar is a very powerful tool of self expression...so don't limit yourself
